Group Ride / Mt. Zion / June 20, 2015

Post by Robin » Thu Jun 18, 2015 8:07 pm

Looks like we've got a dry weekend coming so how about some fun riding at Mt. Zion followed by a picnic! (Good time for the Dads out there to cash in on a pre fathers-day yard pass!)

Carpool /caravan group meet at the Bass Pro shop in Denham Springs. We gather far left side of the parking lot at 7:15am for 7:30am roll out. It is a good 2 hour drive to Brookhaven so for anyone meeting us at the trailhead - we should arrive by 9:30am-ish.

WHEN: Saturday - June 20, 2015
WHERE: 1160 Mt. Zion Rd NW, Brookhaven MS (Plug this address into your GPS and it will take you straight there. There is a small sign on the road that says bike trail. Use that drive way. The next one is the owner's driveway to his house)
RIDE DISTANCE: 1 loop = 9 miles
RIDE LEVEL: I'm going to classify this as beginner friendly mainly because there are bail out areas to the outer perimeter 3 mile trail. You can ride it all for a 9 mile loop or cut some out for a 6 mile loop. There are some heart-pumping granny gearing climbs so be warned! But You can not get lost on this trail and everyone just kind of rides it at their own pace. Some will ride only 1 loop, while others will hit it multiple times.

We will grill post ride!

What to Bring:
1. NO HELMET - NO RIDE!
2. Water/Gatorade and Protein bars/Gu’s for during the ride
3. Tubes/Air and tools should you need trail side repair.
4. Post ride clothes - though there are NO BATHROOMS here for changing.
5. Couple bucks cash for the drop box.
6. Food Contributions for POST RIDE PICNIC!

For the new riders - You should definitely come. Super Fun trail! And Mt. Zion isn't any more technical than Comite but it does have some real climbs. If you're only riding one lap at Comite right now - then I'd recommend you take on the 6 mile loop cutting out the 357 section (about 3 extra miles of climbing). Think this option comes up about a half mile in on the loop. There are several jumps out there - some have signs - some don't - if there is a go-around - then the "bridge" is probably not a bridge - but rather a ramp. Look before you accidentally leap. It's good to check out other trails - next time you ride Comite - you'll have a new perspective.

I think head-count is now up around 12.

I picked up 2 packs of Angus beef hotdogs with buns and 2 small seedless watermelons. Diana is bringing maters and a hom grown mater and cucumber salad plus Brownies! Bob is picking up some burgers and buns tonight. I think he has condiments (Bob Walker?) Could use some chips/dip (maybe humus). Everyone BYOB. Or bring what ever else you might to toss on the grill or have with your burger.
