Comite Workday Saturday August 13th

Comite Workday Saturday August 13th

Postby reddog » Thu Aug 11, 2011 5:24 pm

There will be a workday Saturday August 13th at Comite River Park. We will work on removing the tree blocking the trail just past the Point. Any time left after this is done, we can clear brush or fill mud holes as I will have the heavy equipment available. I will provide something cool to drink and bug spray as well as tools needed.

Burns,
As of midday today, the only remaining tree actually blocking the trail is on the north trail. It is in the 6"-8" size range.

Not sure who did the cutting. Your work order may have made it to the top of the waiting list.

No end of small stuff remaining.

Burns was out this morning cutting those trees. Just that one left, and it will be cut in the morning. If we get a descent group out in the morning and the weather cooperates, should be an awsome weekend for riding.
Never met a MTB'er I didn't like.

I didn't see this post until today - well past 8 AM - but I was planning on coming out for trail work anyway on my own with some pruners and loppers.
Last month I spend several hours clearing low-hanging branches and thorns off the X-trail.
I'll see what I can get done this afternoon. It will be hot and nasty but hopefully the mosquitos and flies won't be so active in the middle of the day.

My bike is made of aluminum but by shears are titanium... hmmm... something wrong with that. :D

Sorry about the short notice, we had some tree issues come up late week and wanted to clear them so everyone's weekends rides wouldn't suffer. Thanks to Cody,Teddy and Wayne for the help. There's still plenty of green growing stuff left though.

Yesterday I spent about two hours and worked only on the small branches, vines, and thorns. I started at the trailhead and got part way down the Beach Trail. It's surprising how unfamiliar the trails look when walking the trail compared to riding them. There are a lot of small minor "trails" criss-crossing here and there that I never noticed when riding.

I found some old painted markers on trees that had gotten covered by the overgrowth and cleared away the growth. The plastic vertical markers are the best markers. Do all the numbers on those match up with those on the BREC trail map?

Yvette, First thanks for the work. It is hard, hot and insect bite intense this time of year. Winter is by far the most pleasant time to do trail work. Walking the trail is great way to learn the layout. And in winter with the underbrush died back you can really see how close the trail passes itself in spots. The painted on tree markings are outdated and need to be painted over. The orange fiberglass posts are meant to replace them. The numbers on the trailhead map match them with a few minor mistakes, not enough to get someone totally lost.
There is currently a project underway to produce a map of Hooper and mark the trail with the orange trail signs. The accuracy of this effort is astounding. The same process is being applied to correct and update the Comite map. The Hooper map should be available for viewing through a link on the forum soon. With the Comite map following shortly. BREC will provide printing services and construct a kiosk at Hooper to display the new map.
Thanks for this projects success go to Wayne Cox, David Cox, Ray Mitchell, Robin Diamond, the rest of the BRAMBA Board members and BREC.

OK I'll keep that in mind. When I was walking in Saturday I passed a guy I didn't recognize at the bike wash. He saw me walking by with the pruners and said "thank you". That made me smile for sure.

Let me know when the next work day is. I don't check this forum often but you can always call or text - did I ever give you my number? I definitely want to help with signage at Hooper. I don't ride there unless I'm with someone who knows the trails. Even with our awesome new wood signs I still get lost with all the "old" trails.
