Work Day at The Beast on Saturday, April 7, 2012

Postby Charley Rome » Mon Mar 26, 2012 5:05 pm

At the last BRAMBA meeting, we picked Saturday, April 7th for a trail work day at The Beast up in St. Francisville. Who is planning on coming up and helping out on April 7th?

We will meet at the trail head in the far right (southeast corner) of the park near the archery range. We are planning on adding the South section back into the loop. The work shouldn't take too long and we plan on riding after.

Workday and Ride at the WFSP (aka Beast) Trail

When: Saturday, April 7th @ 9:00

Where: Park at the West Feliciana Sports Park Trailhead

Directions: Stay on highway 61 North through St. Francisville. As you approach the North side of town a Mobil gas station will come into view on your left. Just before you reach the Mobil station look for the West Feliciana Sports Park sign on your right. Turn right and follow the signs from there.

What: Improve and add a section of trail to the race loop.
This section was once a part of the trail and passes near the archery range, runs along the South side of the deep gully, and returns to the trailhead along the gravel road. The route is pre approved by Park Management.

The work required:

- Chainsaw a few standing small trees
- Cut a ramp up a small bank
- Chainsaw a few fallen trees
- Cut back a few briars
- Rake and bench cut approximately100' of new trail
- Possibly move some lumber to a new bridge site

Estimated time required: Three hours max.

Tools needed: Between Me and Bob Walker, we will have most of the tools required. Bring extra tools if you have them such as a shovel, rake, trail hoe, axe for roots, clippers, and anything that will help clear a small area of briars.

Personal Items required: Bike, food, mosquito dope, gloves, and water.

Note: Any new volunteers must be ok with signing the WFSP hold harmless agreement.
I will have blank copies with me.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone.

Wanted to thank Wayne and Charlie for organizing a great workday out at The Beast in the WFSP. We had a great turnout with many members from BRAMBA, Wreckless Racing and Team Backpacker. The weather was perfect for trail building and riding. With such a large turnout we were able to quickly get done with the trailbuilding and clearing that was on the agenda. Wayne did an excellent job of coordinating with the administration at WFSP. He gained permission to cut a new section and clear and reroute some old trail. The group jumped on everything that was needed and knocked it out quickly. Thanks to everyone for coming out and hope ya'll enjoyed the pizza provided by The Backpacker.

Darius,

This was one enjoyable workday and ride with a group of hard working and hard riding folks. They know how to get it done. I especially enjoyed the comradery between the BRAMBA, Wreckless Racing, and Backpacker clubs. We all enjoy the same outdoor experience.

My nerve disorder may not allow me to show facial expressions, but I was smiling inside all day!

Thanks again to everyone.

I was wondering who Sugar is too. My guess it refers to the 5th pic above with Diamond. Diamond's not know for having the most upper body strength. Put another way, he and the Kenyan marathon runners would have an excellent arm wrestling competition, but the Kenyans would probably win. ;)

And I look like I'm constipated in pic #1. But, I'm 1/2 of 1% stronger in the upper body than Sugar.
